2011 News: Congratulations to David Snowdon 6th (High Jump) and Elliot Lang 7th (Javelin) in the world youth championships in France.
Stein - World champion and world record holder
Jake Stein has become world champion and world record holder in the Octathlon, competing in the 7th IAAF World Youth Championships in Lille France. Stein (Asics Wests), 17, was without peer as he won the event by 364 points and raised the World Youth world record by nine points. He joins Jana Pittman (Hills) and his throws training partner Dani Samuels (Westfields) as NSW three World Youth champions. Pittman had won the 400m hurdles in 1999 and Samuels the discus in 2005. It all started for Stein the day prior with three personal bests in the long jump, shot put and 400m, and in his fourth event the 100m, he was 0.01 seconds outside his personal best. Day 2 started brilliantly as he smashed his 110m hurdles best with a time of 14.25, the second fastest time of the day. Next up was the high jump and he was just short of his summer best of 2.04m, with a great pressure clearance of 1.98m. Going into the seventh event, the javelin, Stein led the 28 man field by nearly 200 points. Stein travelled to Lille with a javelin best of 55.22m, but wiped that out on the first throw with a distance of 57.56m. His second throw was 56.10m before he launched his final attempt out to 59.65m, a 4m personal best. Stein, with a score of 5756, had extended his lead to 399 points going into the final event the 1000m. It was now just Stein against the clock. To break the world record of 6482 he would need to run 2:53.87 or faster. Starting in Heat 2, Stein ran very well to cross the line in seventh place 2:52.93, one second under the required time for the world record and he claimed gold by 364 points.
